WeThread: Giving Power to Your Clothes
WeThread was a speculative design focused on reducing the impact we create on our environment through fast fashion. As of 2018 in North America, there is an estimated 25 billion pounds of waste per year. Fabrics and threads from certain poly blends are making it even harder to break down. All this while releasing chemicals and toxins into rivers and into the soil close to landfills.
We created WeThread as clothing line to serve as an alternative for those who are conscious about the environment but are also looking for latest trends without breaking a pretty penny. The clothing line is made with tabs so that when the garment is nearing the end of its life cycle, it can easily be pulled “de-threaded”. Customers can then deposit the spool of thread at a WeThread ATM. When they’ve deposited enough material, they can select from a catalog and have ATM instantly make them a new shirt from deposited and cleaned threads and materials. Customers can also go online to see their progress, overall impact, and latest designs.
